Common Challenges Faced by Refugees in Canada: Weather, Jobs, and Community

There are many challenges one must face when plunged into a new environment. Refugees in Canada are also tasked with adjusting to these foreign surroundings. The new weather conditions, the ability to find work, as well as finding support systems, are all new barriers to surmount.  

Canada is a country with varying weather conditions. Although these circumstances will vary across the nation’s great terrain, the four seasons influence the weather everywhere. Adjusting to Canada’s winter months may be the biggest challenge relating to the weather. One may need to purchase new clothing, an expensive chore, as well as insure these products are waterproof and windproof. Furthermore, the proper footwear is essential to keeping dry and warm feet. Finally, other products relating to cold temperatures and snow covered streets, such as shovels and ice scrapers, are useful buys in Canada.  

Finding a new job is a difficult task when moving to a new area. Gaining recognition for one’s qualifications is necessary, as many employers will not accept verified credentials from a professional association backed by Canadian standards. Speaking with regulatory bodies and professional associations is an important step in getting one’s qualifications recognized or being introduced to the next step in one’s credential seeking, if necessary. The job market also values experience, specifically local experience. Starting with volunteering or internship positions may gain traction to your resume. Also, being well practised in English or French is important when job hunting in Canada. There are many free classes offered to give one an opportunity to improve themselves.  

Establishing a new community is rather hard. Starting anew can be scary and strange. Participating in activities at local community centres and using social media are great tools to build connections. Furthermore, those attending schools, at any level of education, can find a great deal of clubs that are outlets for a variety of interests, as well as being a great way to meet new people and make friends. It is also important for one to familiarise themselves with the Canadian social services offered to aid newcomers. There are a variety of resources pertaining to healthcare, education, housing support, and much more, which help with one’s transition.  

It is important to be aware and recognise the challenges faced by refugees. Whether it be new snowy forecasts, difficulty with the job market, or finding a new community, there are always ways one may find help; it is important to create a welcoming environment for all newcomers.
